SimpliPhi Powers Up Innovative Energy Storage

Intermittent power production had been the Achilles heel of solar and wind power systems.  Nonetheless, renewable systems have been redeemed with ever more effective and efficient energy storage solutions.  The proprietary energy storage system of upstart SimpliPhi Power is one of them, offering the versatility to meet a variety of use cases.
SimpliPhi has developed a battery that uses non-toxic lithium ferro phosphate chemistry for the cathode in a lithium ion battery.  The capacity of this battery is higher than designs using cobalt oxide chemistry.  Importantly the chemistry is more stable and therefore safer than conventional lithium ion batteries.  SimliPhi has found a way to overcome the drawback of low electrical conductivity that has limited commercialization of ferro phosphate technology in the past.
SimpliPhi claims deployments across the United States and Britain, including businesses, schools, hospitals, and multi-family residences.  The technology has even met the exacting requirements of the U.S. military.
The company’s more recent installation is at a housing development in Washington DC.  A 70.2 kilowatt solar powered system has been installed on the roof of a low income residential facility to supply power in the event of an unplanned power outage.  Climate change is expected to increase the frequency of weather related power interruption.  Communities with limited financial resources are least able to meet the challenges of extended power outages.  SimpliPhi’s high-performance batteries can keep refrigerators humming for food and medicine and outlets providing power for cell phones and laptops to keep residents connected to weather information sources.

SimpliPhi also has an energy storage solution for commercial and industrial applications.  The customizable PHI High Voltage system can be used for peak shaving, load shifting or as an emergency back-up power source.  The company claims at least one commercial deployment at certain Whole Foods stores in California.  The Whole Foods sign is powered by a solar array.  The SimpliPhi energy storage system can power the sign for up to thirty-six hours when the solar array is not generating sufficient power.
Privately held SimpliPhi does not disclose its financial details.  The lack of financial details makes it difficult to decide if the company is a worthwhile target for investors.  The company has accessed the capital markets in the past, raising $2 million in 2016, as a bridge loan to a Series A private placement.  While the company made public details of the bridge loan, ultimately there was no public announcement of the closing of the Series A round.  Up to that point the company had raised $3.5 million from family and friends.  Minority investors could keep ears to the ground for additional financing rounds that might be undertaken to accelerate market penetration to underwrite additional research and development of new products.
