The Business Man

I am a business man. I am a methodical man. Method is the thing, after all.

Edgar All Poe

The Business Man

No one could string together words to evoke a scary thought better than Edgar Allen Poe. Most people are familiar with the black bird of few words in The Raven or muffled but insistent beating of The Tell-Tale Heart.

Poe also wrote The Business Man in 1840, long before electronic trading or the Internet or CRM, ERP and all the rest of the alphabet soup names we apply to business functions. He rails against “genius” and suggests a genius is an “arrant ass” and not suited to business. Reading The Business Man more closely, it becomes clear Poe is tweaking the nose of business people and society in general as too obsessed with measurement of profits and growth.

So take a break from measurement. Read a scary story on this All Hallow's Eve.
