You'v Got a Friend

Hey, ain’t it good to know that you’ve got a friend?
People can be so cold. They’ll hurt you and desert you.
James Taylor, You’ve Got a Friend Album 1971

No, I am going to start singing pop-song lyrics. I am writing about Lauren Rudd, portfolio manager and research analyst. Rudd is author of Streetwise, a syndicated investment advice column that appears in newspapers around the country. Rudd writes the column out of the sheer joy in communicating great ideas to investors. It’s FREE!

The most recent missive dated
July 30, 2006, starts out with comments on current market volatility and then makes an unexpected turn to a discussion of summer time beer drinking and Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. (BUD: NYSE). I also recommend the April 23, 2006 column, in which Rudd took on the Fed and inflation. For that word battle, he referenced Clint Eastwood’s tough guy character Dirty Harry. I understand Eastwood is a fairly astute investor himself, so he may have appreciated Rudd’s recommendation of Genlyte Group, Inc. (GLYT: Nasdaq), a manufacturer of lighting fixtures and controls.

You can find out more about Rudd by visiting
The Rudd Report web site. Of course, there is plenty of solid material there free for the taking by all new friends, including the past publications of his Streetwise newspaper column and several Rudd Reports on various companies.

Institutional investors can look forward in the coming months to more Rudd wisdom through
Zacks Investment Research, which is launching a small cap company research product for money managers. Rudd is one of several analysts who will be the “first to hit the beach” for Zacks on that project.
